
Dr Nand Pal Singh
Senior Technical Advisor, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
Born in 1955, Dr N. P. Singh obtained his Master’s degree in Physics in 1975 and a PhD in Bioenergy. In 1976, he joined the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, where he conducted research on solar cells.
Dr Singh served as Adviser at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) from January 1999, heading various divisions and groups covering Solar, Small Hydro, Biomass and Bioenergy, and New Technologies. He has contributed more than 50 research papers on solar and bioenergy in leading national and international journals and conferences, and authored three books and reports on solar and biomass energy.
He has been the National Project Director of the UNDP/GEF-assisted project on High Rate Biomethanation and the UNDP/GEF PDF project on Fuel Cell Bus Development in India. Over his 30-year tenure at the Ministry, Dr Singh planned and implemented key R&D, demonstration and commercial projects in Small Hydro Power, Solar Photovoltaics, Bioenergy and emerging technologies such as Hydrogen Energy, Fuel Cells and Ocean Energy.
Dr Singh also served as Director General of the National Institute of Solar Energy. He superannuated in July 2015 and has since worked as Senior Consultant at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Since May 2016, Dr Singh has been Senior Technical Adviser at UNIDO, New Delhi, where he has managed numerous projects in renewable energy, micro-hydro, innovation and sustainable cities. He is an international expert on climate change mitigation, decarbonisation, waste-to-biogas/CBG and the circular economy.
