World Biogas Association (WBA) welcomes India’s US$2.7 Billion GOBARdhan Scheme as a landmark move to scale the CBG Sector
The World Biogas Association (WBA) welcomes the Government of India’s approval of the GOBARdhan National Circular Bioenergy Scheme, with an investment outlay of approximately US$2.7 billion (₹23,731 crore), as a landmark step towards building a nationally scaled Compressed Biogas (CBG) industry.
By combining assured offtake, stable pricing, capital assistance, pipeline connectivity, credit support and ecosystem development under one national framework, the Scheme directly addresses many of the barriers that have so far constrained investment and scale-up in the sector.
WBA believes this creates a strong platform for India to move from project development to sustained high performance. The next priority will be to ensure that rapid scale-up is matched by reliable plant operation, strong feedstock systems, high methane recovery, safety, environmental performance and effective digestate utilisation.
Through its #Making Biogas Happen (MBH) programme, WBA can support this next phase by bringing global experience and best practice to India. This includes the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework (GBRF), Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme International (ADCS International), technical capacity building, regulatory benchmarking and support for demonstration projects aligned with international standards.

The Congress will bring together stakeholders from across government and industry to explore the policy, investment and partnerships shaping the sector’s continued growth.
