Grid connections for biomethane open in Australia and Latvia, while in Spain biogas as back-up to solar has delivered 100% renewable coverage in ‘a replicable model’. In France, the Rhone region and grid operator target ‘biomethane autonomy’ by 2050. Biogas as a clean cooking solution takes off in Morocco, thanks to Danone CSR funding. Finally, a breakthrough in green hydrogen, using raw biogas as feedstock.

Political will is rising from its recent slumbers in regard to biogas. Paraná in Brazil has declared it can be the Saudi Arabia of biogas, as it capitalises on its agro-economy; three regions of Spain will fast-track biogas expansion as ‘strategic developments’; and Vienna has set out a six-year plan to turn waste to value. France, meanwhile, has developed a New Energy Systems sector to drive the green transition.

Uncertainty looms over green investments in America as President Trump reviews commitments under his predecessor’s Inflation Reduction Act (but a united front from Republicans and Democrats in favour of biogas looks promising (see December round-up)). Meanwhile, more and more countries are turning to biogas including Nigeria, Serbia, Egypt and Barbados, with Poland consulting on a new support programme to protect water and the environment. Meanwhile, for the first time, bioLPG is bunkered for maritime fuel in Spain.
