World Biogas Association (WBA) marks 10 years of driving global biogas growth

  • The World Biogas Association (WBA) is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026, marking a decade of advancing biogas and biomethane worldwide
  • Anniversary activities throughout the year will highlight WBA’s global impact while focusing on the next phase of industry growth and implementation
  • Celebrations will culminate at WBA’s flagship events: the World Biogas Expo and Summit (8-9 July 2026) and the World Biogas Association INDIA Congress (8-9 October 2026)

This year, the World Biogas Association (WBA) celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of advancing biogas and biomethane as essential solutions for climate action, methane mitigation, energy security and circular economic growth worldwide.

Since its launch at COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016, WBA has worked with governments, industry leaders and international organisations to accelerate development of the global biogas and biomethane sector. Through original research and high-level advocacy at COPs, G20 Energy Meetings, the Clean Energy Ministerial, and key intergovernmental organisations including the International Energy Agency (IEA)Climate Clean Air Coalition (CCAC)World Bank and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), WBA has helped drive political ambition and policy development globally — resulting in more than 50 new policies in the last five years and strong sector growth (averaging 20% annually over the past three years).

WBA has also played a leading role in positioning anaerobic digestion and biogas within the global greenhouse gas reduction agenda and growing international focus on methane mitigation. This work is reflected in WBA’s #MakingBiogasHappen (MBH) programme, launched in 2024 to accelerate national biogas deployment through policy support, regulatory development, international best practice, certification and standards frameworks designed to help the industry scale professionally, safely and at pace.

As WBA reaches this milestone, anniversary activities will be embedded across its 2026 programme – celebrating progress over the past decade while driving the next phase of growth. As the sector enters a defining decade, WBA’s focus is increasingly on building the institutional architecture, policy frameworks and international best practice needed to scale global deployment professionally and safely.

Anniversary celebrations will culminate at two flagship international events in 2026. The World Biogas Expo and Summit, taking place in Birmingham, UK, on 8-9 July 2026, will bring together policymakers, investors and industry leaders from around the world to assess progress and accelerate deployment worldwide. Later in the year, the World Biogas Association INDIA Congress in New Delhi on 8- 9 October 2026 will focus on scaling biogas solutions in one of the world’s fastest-growing priority markets and exploring how successful delivery models can be replicated internationally.

Looking ahead, WBA’s focus is firmly on implementation at scale – accelerating investment, supporting robust regulatory frameworks and helping create investment-ready, lower-risk markets for biogas deployment worldwide. Through initiatives such as the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework (GBRF) and the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS) International – part of the #MBH programme, WBA is helping create the institutional architecture needed to move from policy ambition to on-the-ground execution, while improving operational excellence, investor confidence and international best practice across the sector.

Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association, said:

“Over the last decade, biogas has moved from being an under-recognised technology to a critical part of the global climate and energy transition. WBA has been proud to help drive that change by bringing together governments, industry and international institutions around a shared mission.

But the real opportunity lies ahead. The next ten years must be implementation at scale – accelerating investment, building robust regulatory frameworks and delivering projects that reduce emissions while strengthening energy and food security worldwide.

Through initiatives such as #MakingBiogasHappen (MBH), WBA is helping create the institutional architecture needed to move from policy ambition to on-the-ground execution, ensuring the sector can scale professionally, safely and with global confidence.”

Further details on WBA’s anniversary activities and 2026 events will be announced in the coming months.

About the World Biogas Association

Launched at COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016, the World Biogas Association (WBA) is the global trade association for the biogas, biomethane and anaerobic digestion sectors. WBA works with governments, industry and international organisations to accelerate the deployment of biogas solutions worldwide, supporting climate action, methane mitigation, renewable energy generation, and circular economic growth. Through initiatives including #MakingBiogasHappen and the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme International, WBA is helping develop the policy frameworks, technical standards, certification systems and international best practice needed to support the professional and safe global scale-up of the sector. www.worldbiogasassociation.org
