Chief Executive’s Monthly Update – May 2025
By Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association

Welcome to this edition of the WBA Newsletter.
We’re excited to welcome the release of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) second Outlook for Biogases and Biomethane report – a powerful endorsement of our industry’s role in the global energy transition.
As the report states, there is today a premium attached to projects that deliver on energy security objectives while reducing emissions and creating local value; this is a world of opportunity for biogases.
The report clearly explains why the world must pursue biogas: biomethane alone could meet 25% of today’s global natural gas demand simply by recycling sustainable waste – yet only 5% of this potential is currently realised.
At the World Biogas Association (WBA), our mission is to unlock that potential. That’s where our #MakingBiogasHappen (MBH) Programme comes in – providing the how through two key tools: the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and the AD Certification Scheme International. These initiatives are designed to support countries, regions and industries in scaling up biogas rapidly and sustainably.
In recent weeks, we’ve made significant strides in India and Brazil, recognised as growth epicentres by the IEA. In India, WBA Senior Advisor Dr Pradeep Monga met with national and state leaders to advance a National Biogas Action Plan.
And this month (June), he’ll head to Brazil to formalise collaboration with the State of São Paulo and engage with the federal government and stakeholders to help implement the Fuel of the Future law.
We’re also in discussions with other interested countries, including New Zealand, Argentina and Mexico, to bring MBH to their biogas markets.
Meanwhile, we continue to press for urgent clarity in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), where the lack of guidance on biomethane certificates is holding back the sector. Our #LetGreenGasCount campaign is ongoing, and although the GHGP has responded, their reply falls short. We’re now escalating efforts – read more and join the campaign here.
Finally, we look forward to seeing you at the World Biogas Summit and Expo, taking place 9–10 July at NEC Birmingham – a global platform for driving progress toward a thriving biogas industry.
Let’s keep making biogas happen.
