Chief Executive’s Monthly Update for April 2026
By Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association

April has been another month of tangible progress for the global biogas sector, with encouraging momentum building across several critical fronts
A particular highlight has been the growing focus on maritime decarbonisation and the role of bio-LNG. Our participation in the Members Meeting of Sea-LNG provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with key stakeholders across the methane pathway. It is increasingly clear that unlocking the full potential of bio-LNG will depend on coordinated collaboration across the value chain. This momentum was further reinforced during the April meetings of the International Maritime Organisation, where progress continues the Net Zero Framework. We look forward to exploring these developments in more depth during our upcoming National Associations Meeting on 15th May, with minutes to be shared on our website exclusively for members.
In parallel, we continue our efforts to unlock demand for biomethane by advancing discussions with the GHG Protocol. A key priority of the Let Green Gas Count remains securing interim guidance on biomethane certificates for Scope 1 reporting. The objective is clear: to ensure biomethane is treated analogously to electricity in Scope 2, restoring the clarity that previously supported market development. Achieving this will be instrumental in enabling businesses to confidently integrate biomethane into their decarbonisation strategies. We also prepare to respond to the GHG Protocol’s Actions and Market Instruments White Paper Survey by the end of May, we will share a dedicated communication on this with members – keep an eye out for this!
We are equally proud of the progress being made to improve diversity within our sector. This month, we formalised a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding with Mulheres do Biogas in Brazil, the largest network of women in biogas globally. Alongside this, we launched our third Women in Biogas survey, which has received an unprecedented level of engagement, with over 200 responses. This growing participation reflects both the importance of this work and the sector’s commitment to meaningful change.
Beyond our core advocacy, we are strengthening our role in representing members’ interests within global reporting, accounting and certification frameworks. Recent engagement includes contributions to ISCC PLUS, Science Based Targets initiative, and Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures. As these frameworks continue to evolve, it is essential that the biogas sector is accurately and effectively represented. We welcome your suggestions on additional stakeholders we should be engaging with.
In the coming weeks, we also continue to bring the #MakingBiogasHappen to key biogas markets all over the world to accelerate the safe and professional growth of the sector, from New Delhi (BBB Summit and IEX2026), Kolding, Denmark (GreenGas days Conference), Budapest (Budapest Biogas Summit), Mexico City (VI National Biogas Forum), Paris (IEA Workshop on Sustainable Fuels), Istanbul (Global Waste Forum) and Nancy, France (ASTEE French National Conference).
Finally, we look forward to welcoming the global biogas community to Birmingham on 8-9 July for the World Biogas Expo and Summit. This will be a key moment to come together, share insights, and continue driving the sector forward.
As always, thank you for your continued support and engagement.
