Mexico’s biogas market is gaining momentum amid growing environmental and energy security concerns. Although fossil fuels made up 84.8% of Mexico’s total energy supply in 2023, the country is navigating an evolving energy landscape. The rapid development of its bioenergy sector presents a significant opportunity to meet climate commitments, enhance energy sovereignty, and foster inclusive economic growth, while also contributing to the reduction of energy and food poverty.

BIOGAS POLICY AND MARKET BRIEFING: MEXICO

This Mexico Policy and Market Briefing, developed in close collaboration with the Asociación Mexicana de Biomasa y Biogás (AMBB)*, highlights both the progress and the immense potential of biogas and biomethane as strategic pillars of Mexico’s sustainable energy future. Although still underdeveloped in Mexico compared to other renewable sectors, biogas has significant potential through municipal, agricultural, and industrial waste streams. Regulatory changes and recent pilot biomethane projects indicate growing momentum, though challenges remain in policy clarity, financing, and infrastructure development.

This report was launched at the World Biogas Summit 2025 in Birmingham, UK on 10 July. WBA was honoured to be joined by AMBB President Dr Abel Clemente Reyes.
