Key takeaways from the World Biogas Summit & Expo 2025
This July, over 2,500 delegates gathered at the NEC Birmingham for the World Biogas Summit and Expo 2025. From policy and finance to cutting-edge technical innovation in biomethane (renewable natural gas, RNG) production and carbon capture solutions, this year’s programme demonstrated just how central biogas has become to the climate and energy conversation.
The potential of biogas is enormous. According to the International Energy Agency, recycling all readily available organic wastes through anaerobic digestion (AD) could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 11% and replace one quarter of global natural gas demand. The World Biogas Summit and Expo are helping to realise this scenario by gathering leaders and innovators from across our sector worldwide in one place.
Below, we share key takeaways from two packed days of discussions and knowledge sharing.
The Engine Room at the World Biogas Expo: Technical solutions in focus
Each year, the Engine Room theatre at the World Biogas Expo plays a vital role in championing innovation and best practice in anaerobic digestion. It’s where skilled operators, developers and researchers come together to explore the technical frontiers of our fast-growing sector.
In 2025, Engine Room sessions tackled a wide range of challenges – from project development and process optimisation to regulation, data, and finance.
With standing-room-only crowds and high engagement throughout, the Engine Room proved once again that technical collaboration is the backbone of biogas growth. Huge thanks to our theatre sponsors Kemira and Palmieri Group for their generous support.
The World Biogas Summit 2025… From Waste to Wealth: Powering Economies, Protecting Nature
As Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association (WBA), stated in her opening address at the World Biogas Summit 2025:
“Tackling methane is ever more recognised as the single best solution to pull the emergency brake on our warming climate.”
Around the world, businesses and governments are recognising biogas as one of the most versatile and cost-effective solutions available to:
- Cut methane emissions
- Capture atmospheric carbon
- Decarbonise economies
- Establish local energy security
- Support sustainable agriculture
The World Biogas Summit 2025 brought together international leaders from business, policy and academia to reflect on biogas as a critical solution for the climate, circular economy, and sustainable development.
Thank you to our Summit sponsor Hexagon Agility for helping make this pivotal event possible.
Looking ahead
With momentum growing and recognition accelerating, the 2025 Summit and Expo were a powerful reminder that biogas is no longer a fringe player – it’s a key part of the clean energy transition.
We’ll be sharing full presentations and professional photography shortly – watch this space. If you attended the Expo, please take a moment to share your feedback via our short online survey.
