To slow climate change and #CutMethane, a powerful greenhouse gas, IMEO (International Methane Emissions Observatory) is launching at #COP27 their Methane Alert and Response System (MARS).
With initial funding from the European Commission, the US Government, Global Methane Hub, and the Bezos Earth Fund, this initiative is a critical tool to help governments and companies mitigate emissions of a gas contributing at least a quarter of today’s climate warming.
Thanks to satellites, MARS will detect, measure and then alert, in a transparent manner, governments and companies about large methane sources to foster rapid mitigation action.
This will accelerate implementation of the Global Methane Pledge, an international effort gathering over 120 countries committed to reducing global methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
IMEO has worked on methane emissions from Oil&Gas industry, and is now starting to focus on methane emissions from waste and livestock. WBA is involved in the process, as active member of the IMEO Advisory Council mirror-group.
