Smarter plants mean better returns – what do we need to know?

The biogas landscape is evolving fast: subsidy-free markets, cross-border investment opportunities, and cutting-edge diagnostics are redefining what “efficient” really means. In this exclusive World Biogas Community panel, leading experts Mario Rosato and Will Charlton (Digestor Doc) share how innovation and science are driving real financial and operational returns for investors and operators alike.

From understanding microbial ecosystems to pre-treatment technologies, from cross-border due diligence to social adoption challenges, this session equips investors, developers and operators with the knowledge they need to succeed in dynamic, high-performing biogas projects.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Key lessons from U.S. investors acquiring and upgrading European biogas plants.
  • How to avoid the “cookie-cutter” approach — why local feedstock, environment, and biology matter.
  • Using data and diagnostics to boost yields, efficiency, and asset value.
  • Why biological due diligence is the next ROI driver in anaerobic digestion.
  • Emerging pre-treatment technologies and strategies that can transform plant performance.
  • Social adoption: overcoming anti-AD sentiment and building community support.
  • Real-world examples of innovation applied across borders and contexts
  • What makes experts optimistic about biogas growth in Europe and the U.S.
  • Current gaps and challenges limiting wider adoption of biogas plants globally.

Who Should Attend: Investors, project developers, operators and anyone interested in the intersection of biogas, technology and investment.

Speakers

Mario Rosato

Prof. Eng. Mario A. Rosato, author of “Managing Biogas Plants – A Practical Guide” (CRC Press, 2017), has a wide ranging experience in anaerobic digestion, with a specific experience in plant diagnostics and process control. As a biogas expert, he actively participated in the working group that created the new UNI 11703:2018 standard for biomethane potential assessment (BMP)

Past WBA Connect+ events

Managing a biogas plant is more than monitoring pH, temperature, or conductivity. Its about understanding the microbial community driving your process.

In this exclusive World Biogas Community session, Mario Rosato unveils a ground breaking respirometry-based method that allows operators to see the real story behind anaerobic digesters and prevent biological collapse before it happens. Mario will explain how this approach, already delivering up to 30% more methane for companies, can be applied on real plants and not just in the lab.

Learn practical techniques to spot early warning signs, optimise microbial health, and boost biogas yields.

Key Takeaways:

  • Why traditional monitoring often misses the microbial “health” that drives your plant.
  • How respirometry can prevent biological failure and stabilise digester performance.
  • The science behind 30% higher methane yields now in practical use.

India’s Biogas Breakthrough: Inside Refex’s Expansion from Renewables to Waste-to-Energy India is emerging as one of the world’s most dynamic biogas markets — but success requires navigating a landscape very different from Europe or North America.

In this exclusive World Biogas Community session, the CEO of Refex, one of India’s fastest-growing renewable energy companies, shares a rare behind-the-scenes look at what it truly takes to scale biogas in a subsidy-free, high-pressure environment. Refex has rapidly evolved from a leader in solar and wind into one of the most active players in India’s biogas sector. This webinar uncovers the strategic decisions, operational realities, and lessons learned from building viable projects in one of the toughest markets in the world.

What we’ll explore:

  • How Refex transitioned from solar & wind into biogas — and why now is the moment.
  • What it takes to build biogas plants in India’s subsidy-free environment.
  • The real economics behind municipal solid waste (MSW) and press-mud biogas projects.
  • Refex’s acquisition strategy — and what it reveals about supply chains, O&M, and efficiency gains.
  • Why India’s policy landscape, cost structures, and feedstock logistics differ sharply from Western markets.
  • What international investors must understand before entering India’s renewable energy space.
  • What’s next for biogas in India’s energy mix post-COP — and opportunities for global collaboration.

Join us for an insider’s look at the numbers, the strategy, and the lessons learned from one of India’s leading renewable energy companies.

Inside the Opaque Biomethane Market: Pricing, Proofs of Sustainability and Regulatory Drivers

WHEN: 26 November 2025, 1-2 PM GMT | Online

Biomethane markets are exploding across Europe – but understanding how value is actually created (or lost) remains a mystery to most producers, buyers and investors.

Unlike renewable electricity, where Guarantees of Origin offer a harmonised pricing framework, biomethane certification is fragmented, opaque and deeply dependent on national regulation, feedstock origin and end-use application.

In this one-hour session, we lift the curtain on how biomethane is really priced – and why the same molecule can be worth €30/MWh in one country and €150/MWh in another.

We’ll unpack:

  • What’s actually trading today in European biomethane markets – who’s buying, who’s selling, and why?

  • How Proofs of Sustainability influence price – what matters most: feedstock, geography, end-use or policy compliance?

  • Voluntary vs compliance markets – who pays more: corporate decarbonisation buyers or mandate-driven sectors such as maritime and transport?

  • Which policy shifts (EU and non-EU) will move prices next?

  • How certification of power and biomethane interact – and how to leverage both in corporate decarbonisation.

Drivers of regional biogas growth: North America and Asia

WHEN: Wednesday, 22 October, 3-4 PM BST | Online

Biogas and biomethane have massive potential to transform energy systems worldwide – yet progress looks very different from one region to the next. Why has China leapt ahead in biomethane while ASEAN countries are still unlocking their potential? Why does biogas still lag behind other renewables in visibility and investment? And what can a global community do to change that?

Join Community Ambassadors Hilman Putra (ACT Group) and Alex Marshall (Clarke Energy), for an exclusive discussion of regional differences affecting industry growth.

Understand:

  • Key regional drivers from North America and Asia
  • What policies, subsidies, and feedstock availability mean for scaling up
  • Lessons learned from contrasting regional success stories
  • Untapped opportunities in agriculture, wastewater, food & beverage, and municipal waste
  • How we can better showcase biogas on the global stage.

This interactive roundtable brings together regional ambassadors, industry experts, and community members for a global conversation on barriers, opportunities, and the actions needed to accelerate momentum.
