The World Biogas Association (WBA) played a strategic role at India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, one of the world’s most influential energy platforms convening global policymakers, industry leaders and investors to shape the future of energy systems.

As India accelerates its clean energy ambitions, IEW 2026 provided an important forum to position biogas and biomethane as scalable, near-term solutions delivering significant emissions reduction, waste management and energy security benefits. WBA’s engagement reflects three years of work helping to secure recognition of bioenergy as a critical pillar of the global energy transition, particularly in fast-growing markets such as India where circular economy solutions are increasingly aligned with national priorities.

Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of WBA, represented WBA across a series of high-level engagements, contributing a global biogas perspective to key discussions, and highlighting the huge benefits for India of committing to a National Biogas Mission. She first participated in a session on “Advanced drop-in biofuels and near-term decarbonization: accelerating the transition for mobility“, during which she described how launching such a National Biogas Mission would have the greatest impact in consolidating and extending India’s leadership in advanced biofuels over the next two years.

Her involvement also included a roundtable discussions on “Future of Mobility-Way forward (E20&Beyond)” hosted by ISMA, underscoring the role of biogas and compressed biogas in immediately being able to support India’s decarbonisation pathway and rural economic development. She then took part in the launch of the International Energy Agency’s India Bioenergy Market Report Outlook for liquid and Gaseous Biofuels to 2030, highlighting the potential of biogas in particular. The IEA report outlines actionable policy priorities supported by global best practices, such as those included in the World Biogas Association’s Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme, to accelerate deployment of the liquid and gaseous biofuels.

During her visit to India, Charlotte also joined a closed-door Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) roundtable, engaging with policymakers, think-tank leaders and industry stakeholders on the policy, market and investment frameworks required to accelerate bioenergy deployment.

Through these strategic dialogues, WBA reinforced its role as the trusted global voice for the biogas sector, the resources it can offer to governments and states to support their development of biogas action plans, strengthening collaboration with Indian and international partners, and advancing the case for a National Biogas Mission to facilitate the rapid growth of a safe, professional and high performing industry in India.
