Welcome to this edition of the WBA Newsletter.

2025 has been a year of significant progress for the World Biogas Association as we advance our mission to accelerate the safe and sustainable deployment of biogas as a practical, scalable climate solution. Across continents, in diplomatic arenas, and at the highest levels of policy and industry leadership, the closing months of the year have built on momentum that reflects both the growing maturity of our organisation and the rising global recognition of biogas.

One of the most defining moments of 2025 was our participation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. There, WBA ensured that the biogas sector’s voice was heard on the global stage, championing methane mitigation, sustainable fuels, and energy transition pathways grounded in biogas solutions.

We contributed to high-level discussions, showcased the impact of our #MakingBiogasHappen programme and the Let Green Gas Count campaign, and highlighted the critical role biogas can play in delivering the newly launched 4× Belém Pledge – a commitment by multiple nations to quadruple the use of sustainable fuels by 2035. Through our events and roundtables, we demonstrated how biogas can deliver on climate commitments through methane reduction and circular economy impacts, while underscoring the urgent need for renewable gases to be properly recognised in global climate accounting frameworks.

After years of sustained advocacy, including through the Let Green Gas Count campaign, 2025 also marked real progress in greenhouse gas accounting. We finally saw important steps taken by both the GHG Protocol (GHGP) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to more fairly reflect the climate benefits of renewable gases. This progress is evidenced by the forthcoming GHGP White Paper and the newly released Corporate Net-Zero Standard from SBTi, both of which advance the acceptance of market-based instruments in GHG inventories. We were also encouraged by an extremely positive meeting with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), co-administrator of the GHGP, which signalled a willingness to explore interim solutions for the sector ahead of the revised guidance on market-based mechanisms expected in 2028.

At the national level, the World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2025, held on 3–4 December in New Delhi, was a resounding success. Bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, and experts from India and beyond, the Congress highlighted India’s rapid rise toward becoming a global biogas superpower. Over two packed days, discussions focused on policy alignment, leadership frameworks, and technical innovation to accelerate deployment at scale. The event helped cristallise a shared vision for India’s energy future and strengthened calls for a National Biogas Mission-— an integrated strategy to unify existing programmes and unlock biogas’s full potential as a climate, energy, and waste management solution. We also signed Memorandum of Understandings with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) for the roll-out of the #MakingBiogasHappen (#MBH) programme in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, and with REFEX to support them in becoming the first plant operator in India to meet the standards of the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme International (ADCS International).

This month, we were also honoured to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Paraná, Brazil, establishing a strategic collaboration to implement our #MBH programme in collaboration with key stakeholders in one of the country’s most advanced biogas markets. This partnership paves the way for state-level implementation of the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and ADCS International, creating the conditions needed to attract investment, strengthen regulatory certainty, and scale high-performance biogas infrastructure.

Taken together, these achievements – from global advocacy at COP30, to progress on GHG emissions accounting, to high-impact convenings and partnerships – demonstrate the breadth and depth of WBA’s work, even within just the final months of the year. They also reflect a wider shift: biogas is no longer seen as a niche solution, but increasingly recognised as a proven, ready-to-scale pillar of climate action, energy security, and circular economies.

As we approach the holiday season and look ahead to 2026, we extend our sincere thanks to our members, partners, and stakeholders worldwide. Your commitment and collaboration drive every milestone we achieve. Together, we have laid strong foundations for the year ahead.

Here’s to the successes of 2025, to time with loved ones over the holidays, and to even greater impact in 2026. Together, let’s continue turning ambition into action — and keep Making Biogas Happen.
