Sweden Launches $106 million Biogas Production Package
Sweden has opened applications for gaseous and liquified biogas production support, allocating an SEK 1.035 billion ($106 million) budget covering manure-based biogas and upgraded biomethane.
The state-backed mechanism is designed to accelerate biogas and biomethane production, particularly from livestock manure, the Swedish Energy Agency said.
“The scheme provides compensation per kilowatt-hour of biogas produced from manure and per kilowatt-hour of biogas upgraded to biomethane, regardless of whether delivered in gaseous or liquid form,” the Agency said.
“Support is disbursed up-front based on expected production in 2026, providing immediate liquidity and reducing financing pressure for producers.”
Under the Swedish scheme, the plant must produce biogas within Sweden, with said production occurring between 1 January 2026-31 December 2026.
Likewise, feedstocks used in the production process must align with the EU Renewable Energy Directive’s Annex IX, which includes feedstcocks such as manure, municipal biowaste, agricultural residues, wastewater sludge, used cooking oil, Category 1&2 tallow, lignocellulosic materials and algae grown on land.
Meanwhile, the scheme imposes a 50,000 mt per year cap on installed production capacity for eligible plants, with support targeting smaller to medium-sized operators. Plants with production capacity over 2 MW will also require sustainability certification.
Participants will have until 15 December to submit applications, which require site details, estimated output, detailed costing breakdowns and the disclosure of all revenue streams and investment aid received or applied for.
