
MEMBER PRESS RELEASE – HRS Heat Exchangers – Pasteurisation boosts biogas investment

This year’s Salón del Gas Renovable (the sixth edition of the Renewable Gas Exhibition) comes at a key time in the development of Spain’s biogas sector. In 2024 Spain had 12 biomethane sites, rising to 25 in 2025, and by the end of 2026 the country will have 46 operation biomethane facilities. The trajectory of development continues to double each year, with as many as 90 projects anticipated to come online in 2027.
In fact, the European Biogas Association (EBA) has indicated that Spain has the highest potential for biomethane production in Europe, potentially producing 13.2 bcm/yr by 20401. The EBA also believes that ‘by 2050, Europe’s biogas sector could generate around 177 million tonnes of fertilisers from nutrient-rich waste streams’2.

Inevitably, such a large increase in biogas production requires the optimisation of every stage of the production chain, including maximising energy use and minimising waste. “When we talk about biogas, we usually focus on the gas itself. However, the true efficiency of a biogas plant begins when we properly manage everything that is not gas,” stresses Antonio Guillermo Jara Ponce, European Sales Manager at HRS Heat Exchangers, who will be speaking at the event.

HRS Heat Exchangers has an extensive range of heat exchangers and systems for the anaerobic digestion (AD)and biogas sector including solutions for digester heating and exhaust heat recapture, the company offers specialised systems including the HRS Biogas Dehumidification System (BDS); the HRS Digestate Pasteurisation System (DPS); and the HRS Digestate Concentration System (DCS).
Earlier this year the first HRS Digestate Pasteurisation System (DPS) was commissioned at an AD plant which is converting a mixture of agricultural and livestock waste, including whey, olive pomace, chicken manure and pig slurry into 58 GWh of biomethane (providing enough energy to power 11,000 homes).

The HRS DPS uses a corrugated double tube heat exchanger to heat the digestate to 75°C, 5°C above the required pasteurisation temperature, and recovers as much as 50% of the total thermal energy as heat from the hot pasteurised digestate is passed to the incoming cold digestate, resulting in savings of 1.75 million kWh of thermal energy (or 375t CO2 emission per year).

In his presentation, Antonio will explain not only how the pasteurisation process works, but also the legal, technical and economic benefits that treating digestate provides.
