WBA delegation champions biogas at the Indian Bioenergy conference and exhibition

A WBA delegation attended the India Bio-Energy & Tech Expo (IBET 2025), organised by the Indian Federation of Green Energy (IFGE) from 24–26 September in New Delhi. Held under the theme “Transition to Net Zero: Need to Scale Up Bioenergy Initiatives,” the event brought together over 1,000 delegates, 100 exhibitors, and 30 technical sessions.

WBA was represented by Dr Pradeep Monga (Policy Director and Senior Advisor), Dr Dilip Kumar Khare (Technical Advisor, India), and Arti Gupta (Country Manager, India). Their participation underscored WBA’s expanding role in India and emphasised the importance of global collaboration in growing the biogas sector.

On 24 September, Dr Monga participated in the session “International Perspective on Bioenergy: Enabling Global Energy Transition” at the International Conference on Bioenergy and Technologies. He joined representatives from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), LanzaTech, Verbio Group, Praj Industries, and Shree Renuka Sugars Limited, with special addresses by the Ambassador of Brazil to India and Mr Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister of India.

Dr Monga emphasised the urgency of speeding up deployment:
“We have less than six years until 2030 to build hundreds of thousands of biogas plants worldwide. Without urgent and coordinated efforts, the sector risks missing its critical window to contribute meaningfully to global climate and energy transition targets.”

He also highlighted WBA’s #MakingBiogasHappen programme, which focuses on policy, regulations, standards, and certification. He emphasised its significance and relevance for India’s rapidly expanding biogas sector.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views with government officials, experts, champions, and industry CEOs on accelerating the bioenergy transition in India and globally. Dr Monga met with Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, Honourable Minister of State for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and held several meetings with CEOs on the sidelines of the IFGE Conference.

Strengthening the WBA–IFGE partnership

WBA’s presence at IBET followed the Memorandum of Understanding signed with IFGE in July 2025. The partnership combines IFGE’s national reach with WBA’s global expertise in policy, standards, and capacity building. Together, they are shaping India’s biogas roadmap and enhancing the country’s profile as a future global leader in the sector.

Throughout the event, the WBA Team met with leading companies, including the Reliance Group, to discuss technology scale-up, feedstock optimisation, and financing. The delegation also visited exhibitors across the expo, identifying new opportunities and sharing insights from WBA’s international programmes.

From IBET to the WBA INDIA Congress 2025

The momentum from IBET now directly feeds into the World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2025, co-hosted with IFGE in New Delhi on 3–4 December 2025. The Congress will bring together policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to focus on expanding compressed biogas (CBG/biomethane/RNG), strengthening supply chains, and developing the regulatory and financial frameworks needed to deliver quickly and at scale.

Accelerating India’s biogas journey

The partnership between WBA and IFGE bridges global best practices with India’s local conditions and expertise, creating the conditions to turn ambition into action. By combining international standards and policy with national networks, the organisations are supporting India’s rise as a biogas superpower.

IBET 2025 highlighted the urgency of this mission. The upcoming World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2025 will be the next step in advancing the biogas agenda to generate economic, environmental and social benefits for India, with a global impact.
