USDA report says grow energy crops in most favourable areas

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service has published a new report on the effect that dedicated energy crops have on competition for agricultural land. Although the report primarily focuses on crops grown as feedstock for biomass and liquid biofuel production, it shows that energy crops should be focused in areas where they have a yield advantage over other crops. This means that the highest yields can be obtained and the overall area required. Under the scenarios considered, which focused on biomass electricity, the US would require 25-29 million acres of switchgrass to generate 250 TWh of electricity per year.
