Call for biogas industry case studies from around the world

The World Biogas Association (WBA), the international trade body for the biogas industry, is calling for case studies – and wants to hear from you.
The latest WBA report, the Global Potential of Biogas, published last year, showed that, given the right policy support, biogas can deliver a huge 12% reduction in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions – the equivalent of the GHGs emitted by the United States in 2012. To achieve this, however, we need to share knowledge globally and identify the right conditions to unlock the potential of our sector.
WBA has just launched the World Biogas e-Festival, a virtual conference on global biogas markets, which will take place online from 18th to 21st May. We want to use this event to showcase the best biogas projects from around the world. The e-Festival will feature regional sessions and the best case studies that we receive from each region will be selected for presentation at the event. This is a great opportunity for you to tell the world about your project and explain what made it a success, which barriers you had to overcome and how.
Additionally, the case studies will help build the evidence for our next report, Pathways to 2030, which will include the best examples . Every year, WBA publishes ground-breaking reports that demonstrate the benefits of biogas. In 2020, the WBA’s report will focus on how the biogas industry can achieve the 12% GHG reductions identified in last year’s report, by 2030. To illustrate this, we need to know how you are delivering outstanding projects today, so we can set out the conditions necessary to replicate these worldwide.
The Pathways to 2030 report is aimed primarily at the policymakers, at a local, national and international level, that will be making decisions about how to achieve reductions in GHG under the Paris Climate Change Agreement, as well as those responsible for deciding what support to provide to biogas projects. We were planning to present the report at the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow this November. But now that it has been postponed, we will seek to hand it over to the UN at the earliest opportunity. It will, in any case, be published for the industry’s use and discussed at the World Biogas Summit which we will be hosting in October.
All countries have committed to keeping global warming within and well below 2oC by 2100. They now have to publish their national plans (the Nationally Determined Contributions, NDCs) on how they are going to do that by the time COP26 takes place.
We need your help to ensure biogas is at the centre of those plans.
What we are looking for
We are asking you to send us case studies showing best practice in the implementation and use of biogas. This might be in rural areas, in major cities, or in industrial contexts treating specific waste flows. We are looking for examples of how using biogas has reduced GHG emissions, reduced pollution from untreated biowastes, created jobs and investments, contributed to clean air, and solved problems relative to local challenges. We want to know about innovative technologies, integration between biogas and other renewable energies, and the relationship between biogas and the agricultural community. We want to know what we don’t know in terms of the wide-reaching benefits that biogas can deliver. And, most importantly, we want to know what conditions enabled these projects to succeed.
We are also asking for examples of what didn’t work so that we can understand why. We all learn from problems and failures and want to try to highlight common issues faced by our sector (connectivity to grids, lack of feedstocks, workforce issues, health and safety, price support, finding finance, managing digestate
etc.).
